Masjid e Aisha, also known as Masjid e Taneem or Taneem Mosque, serves as a significant starting point for pilgrims embarking on Umrah and Hajj rituals. Named after Prophet Muhammad’s wife, Aisha, who entered Ihram here for her Umrah pilgrimage, the mosque is a Miqat or station for dressing in Ihram clothing. Equipped with bathing facilities and surrounded by vendors selling essential items, pilgrims commence their Umrah journey by entering Ihram at Masjid Aisha.
The History and Significance of Masjid-e-Aisha
Upon discovering that his wife was menstruating, the Prophet permitted Aisha to enter Ihram at this location to fulfill her Umrah journey. Accompanied by her brother, Abdur-Rahman, she journeyed to Taneem and back, a privilege granted specifically to Aisha or other women in similar circumstances.
Following the Prophet’s instructions, Aisha proceeded with the Hajj, fulfilling all rites and steps of the pilgrimage except Tawaf. She waited until her menstrual cycle had ended to complete Tawaf. Upon finishing all Hajj rituals, she remarked,
“O Rasulullah! While you have performed Hajj and Umrah, I have performed only Hajj,” Aisha expressed. In response, the Prophet instructed her brother to take her to Taneem. From there, she embarked on her Umrah journey during the month of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar.
Can Ihram be worn from Masjid Ayesha?
Ihram, the sacred attire worn during the pilgrimage of Umrah and Hajj, must be donned at one of the specified Miqat points based on one’s travel route. Masjid Ayesha serves as a Miqat for individuals in Makkah embarking on the sacred journey of Umrah and Hajj. Additionally, Muslims intending to perform Umrah twice during the same trip should exit Masjid Al-Haram and renew their Ihram at Masjid Ayesha before beginning the second Umrah.
How to Reach Taneem Mosque:
The sacred Taneem Mosque is located approximately 10 km from Masjid al-Haram, situated on the highway towards Madinah. If you are at Masjid al-Haram, you can easily reach Masjid-e-Aisha by taking a local bus from Bab-e-Fahad, one of the gates of Masjid al-Haram located on the outskirts. These buses run frequently and offer affordable fares. Alternatively, from the city center of Makkah, you can reach Masjid e Taneem by taxi in just 20 minutes.
Masjid-e-Aisha is the most convenient and closest location for entering into Ihram, situated within the boundaries of the Haram.
