Umrah Done Right A Guide

What is Umrah?

Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey that Muslims can undertake at any time throughout the year to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory, Umrah is a voluntary pilgrimage that is highly recommended for those able to perform it. Often referred to as the “lesser pilgrimage,” Umrah consists of a series of meaningful rituals designed to bring Muslims closer to Allah, purify their hearts, and strengthen their spiritual connection. The journey is not just a physical one; each prayer and act during Umrah serves as a profound reminder of faith, humility, and unity.

As you prepare for this sacred journey, the first step begins with a sincere niyyah (intention) to perform Umrah. This intention is essential, as it sets the foundation of your pilgrimage and focuses your devotion to Allah.

1. Make Niyyah (Intention) for Umrah

Your journey starts with making a clear and sincere intention (niyyah) to perform Umrah solely for Allah’s sake. Before crossing any of the meeqat (entry points to the holy area), pause to reflect and verbally declare your intent to begin this pilgrimage. You will then recite the Talbiyah prayer:

“At your service, O Allah, at Your service.”

This prayer marks the beginning of your Umrah, declaring your submission to Allah’s will and setting the tone for the entire journey. The Talbiyah is a profound expression of devotion that will accompany you as you proceed towards Mecca, helping to focus your heart on worship.

2. Enter Ihram Before Meeqat

The next significant step is entering the state of Ihram, which symbolizes purity and unity. For men, Ihram consists of two unstitched white cloths, while women wear modest clothing. This attire represents equality in the eyes of Allah, as all pilgrims appear the same, with no distinctions based on social or economic status. Ihram is entered at the meeqat and prepares the soul for the sacred rituals to come, keeping the focus on worship and devotion.

3. Perform Tawaf Around the Kaaba

Upon arrival at Masjid Al-Haram, you will perform Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times. This act represents submission and unity before Allah. During the first three rounds, men must perform Ittiba (uncovering the right shoulder) and Ramal (brisk walking). Each step around the Kaaba brings you closer to Allah, reaffirming your faith and commitment.

However, Tawaf can sometimes be overwhelming due to the large crowds. Unfortunately, theft can occur during such busy times. To protect your belongings, consider using anti-theft products from Hajj Safe. Their secure bags and belts ensure your valuables remain safe as you focus on your worship.

4. Drink from the Zamzam Well

After completing Tawaf, it is recommended to drink from the blessed Zamzam water, a miraculous gift from Allah to Hajar (RA) and her son, Prophet Ismail (AS). Drinking this water symbolizes Allah’s mercy and blessings. Use this moment to make personal duas, asking Allah for guidance, health, and acceptance of your pilgrimage.

5. Perform Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Next, you will perform Sa’i, which involves walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. This act commemorates Hajar‘s (RA) search for water for her son. As you walk, reflect on the strength found in faith and the importance of perseverance. Sa’i is a powerful reminder of trusting Allah, especially in times of hardship.

6. Conclude with Halq or Taqsir

To complete your Umrah, men perform Halq (shaving the head), while women perform Taqsir (trimming a small portion of hair). This final step symbolizes spiritual renewal and humility. After Halq or Taqsir, you exit Ihram, completing the Umrah and symbolizing the cleansing of past sins.
